In Contrast to the U.S., Canada Realizes Value of Immigration

Unlike countries such as the U.S., Japan, Brazil, and those in Europe, “Canada is one of the very few countries in the world where immigration is seen as a net plus when you poll the public.”  A recent article discusses the need for Canada to reexamine its immigration system and problems such as the underemployment of its immigrant workforce.  As it is, many would be immigrants are now finding it preferable to remain in their own booming home economies rather than face the administrative quagmire or the prospect of underemployment.  Experts are advising how to help the country maintain its competitive edge.  Although the Republican party is promoting “self-deportation,” hunting illegal immigrants down through FedEx (Gingrich is really creepy), and the like, efforts are conversely being made to attract highly skilled workers and entrepreneurs to the U.S.  The U.S. conversation needs to move away from scare tactics to problem solving (hello! – the DREAM Act can potentially generate trillions for the U.S. economy) and boosting optimism and growth.
