Los Angeles County Sheriff Backs License for Unauthorized Immigrants

| Feb 7, 2024 | Firm News

L.A. county Sheriff Lee Baca is in support of a provisional license for unauthorized immigrants who don’t have criminal backgrounds.  His main concern appears to be public safety.  The argument in favor is that California’s roads will be safer if applicants for the license are put through the testing, screening and identification process.  Those with licenses will, of course, be required to carry insurance.  The number of hit and run accidents would be expected to decrease.  The provisional licenses would need to be renewed annually and will be different from appearance than those of U.S. citizens or those residing here lawfully.  He acknowledges that state officials will have to address public concerns regarding the belief that such licenses will allow terrorists to go undected.  However the cost-benefit analysis seems to tip in favor of public safety over unsubstantiated terrorism or “opening the floodgate” fears.
