Susan Bolton, a Federal District Judge in Phoenix, has enjoined four of the major and most controversial provisions of Arizona’s SB 1070. Specifically, the law cannot: require Arizona police to verify a person’s immigration status if they suspect the person to be unlawfully present; make failure to carry proof of lawful immigration status a crime; make it illegal to solicit work when the person does not have work authorization; and, authorize a warrantless arrest where the underlying basis of the crime can render someone removable from the U.S. For a summary of the ruling and reasoning, click here.
