Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian Nationals

Secretary of Homeland Security has announced that DHS will be designating Syria for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) due to the deteriorating conditions in that country and serious threats to Syrian nationals’ safety if they return to their home country.  The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will publish a notice in the Federal Register which will provide further guidance about TPS eligibility requirements and registration procedures.  Syrian nationals should not submit their applications before the notice is published and will have to undergo full background checks when they apply.

“Through this notice, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announces that the Secretary of Homeland Security (Secretary) has designated the Syrian Arab Republic (Syria) for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for a period of 18 months, effective March 29, 2012 through September 30, 2013. … This designation of Syria for TPS is effective on March 29, 2012 and will remain in effect through September 30, 2013. The 180-day registration period for eligible individuals to submit TPS applications begins March 29, 2012, and will remain in effect through September 30, 2013.” – Federal Register / Vol. 77, No. 61 / Thursday, March 29, 2012.
